Get Spooky With It

(rant) Stop Comparing.

Wed May 13, 2009, 7:05 PM
(if you do not agree, Don't flame)
Sorry for posting another journal so soon...but i need to go on a rant here. I've talked to my friends and other ppl who have gone through the same thing I have and that made me want to post a journal about it.

What am I talking about?

I'm talking about the whole "O your character/storyline/style reminds me of an existing character/storyline/style."

I'm pretty sure many of you have dealt with it...and it's really annoying because it's like saying we purposely sit there all day and try to copy as much of an existing source as we can when that's not the case at all! We put aspects that we like into a character and it's not our fault that an existing character like that already exists.

For example, uh let's say im a person that likes emo serious characters and I've always wanted to create one. OH! I recently saw Sasuke's picture and I really liked his personality so now I want to get into the Naruto series just to look him up! He's my kinda character and I'm so glad I found one in an anime series! Ok so now I want to create my emo serious character after seeing how cool such a character can be in an anime. So I draw out my character...and the comments I get are "O he reminds me of Sasuke..."

Isn't that aggravating?
I know it's just something you're pointing out...but plz...refrain from making these type of comments if you do. When you make those comments it feels as if the uniqueness that I have put into something has been done in vain and has gone unnoticed.

Another thing is that ppl who make these comments only look at one aspect of the character and judge from that.

Oh if a character is a secret agent spy and a total sadistic megalomaniac but she has dark blue hair and pigtails: OH SHE REMINDS ME OF HATSUNE MIKU OR LENALEE!
oh if the character has brown hair and is a bean farmer but is determine and happy: OMG HE REMINDS ME OF NARUTO!!!!
OH He's a murderer: OMG KIRA!!! LKSDFJDSLK

It's acceptable I suppose, if they specify something like O his hair reminds me of Naruto's hair....but don't just say the entire character reminds u of naruto just cuz they have similar hair.
Look at the whole character plz...don't just clump and stereotype.

How does this apply to me??

Ok I have a comic and I have been getting many comments and have been told many times that "O ur ____ reminds me of Death Note, V for Vendetta, Neuro..."

I will tell you this, because of my personality, I've loved action/killer/mystery series, crazy cuckoo maniacs, objective main characters, trigger happy characters, Guy/girl Bonnie/Clyde duos, master and apprentice relationships, revenge plots, and cool eloquent guys for a long time now.

And because of that, everytime there was a show or a movie about a fun maniacal main character, i would immediately swarm to it or if there was a show about bonnie/clyde or murder action, i'd get into it.

So that is why when I heard there was such a movie like V for Vendetta or Kill Bill, I wanted to watch it or when someone told me there was a manga with a guy/girl Bonnie/Clyde duo like Neuro I was like omg cool! I gotta check this out!

Then when I made up my story, I was putting the type of situations and ideas and characters that I love into one story and as I went along certain things inspired me. Others things that ppl compare my stuff too came to me after I already had my concept in my mind.

The author or V for Vendetta must have really liked revenge plots in order to write what he did and I'm sure that he was inspired by the Count of Monte Cristo, a book published in the 1800's about revenge by Dumas, and I'm pretty sure Dumas was also inspired by something else. That's just being eclectic, not imitating. Everything around us inspires us but they only inspire us because we have already formed ideas that we like. Mozart isnt going to inspire Snoop Dogg because Snoop Dogg already decided he likes rap. Tupac might inspire Snoop Dogg because Tupac was one of the first rappers during Snoop Dogg's time. That does not mean Snoop Dogg copied Tupac.

All the differences that I make in my stuff is quickly covered by the hasty generalizations and clumpings that ppl make.

Believe me, I love comments and I love it when ppl take the time to give comments but when u post statement like "O THIS REMINDS ME OF ____", you're detracting from the comic and you're making me feel like a total douchebag copy cat when I get many of my ideas from myself. I have thoughts like these all the time but I never comment with them because I want to comment with something that actually pertains to the person's individual style rather than grouping him/her into an existing genre.

Thank you.

I get that a lot about my characters > n< It's so irritating. Like, I can't like something because someone else likes it? ._____.
:iconhiruda:
yes exactly!

Just cuz my character has spiky blonde hair and i love spiky blonde hair..that does not make him naruto!

I got a very similar comment just a couple days ago on my ref sheet for one of my characters for a comic in the makings XD;
was no harm done though, I had never heard of the character before

For some characters, looks is all people have to go on unless they're actively roleplaying with you. (Like the Miku comment) But once you spell out their life stories, there really is no excuse to compare them unless they're just doing it to be annoying or don't know better. XD

Then again, I don't really know if you have told their stories, or if they're just pictures. :D

I have no idea who my characters can be compared to, besides ideal versions of myself xD

And there are only so many plotlines in life, they're bound to be copied over and over, but the characters(usually) change and things can be added/ removed.

Hey... I might have failed, but at least I tried....
:iconsamayosukuichi:
Ahhh. I've probably have been guilty of this. >___>;

But I should totally show this journal to my friend. Unlike you, she gets emo and sad (over exagerratttttiing~) because her plotline seems to similar to this plotline or has an almost same ending or her characters seem too similar to these characters. Or that character has that hair style ... I can't use ti!

And yes. It's not anyone's fault if a character comes out similar to another. It's all be done. As they say. So it's bound to happen. You've just been inspired by a character/plotline/whatever that is similar 's all. -shrugs-

Ahhh ... I was gonna so totally say something else. But I got distracted. ; ________; IT WAS A GOOD POINT TOO.
:iconhiruda:
well it's a comic so their personalities and mannerisms are clearly shown....

And with some ppl, even though the life stories are spelled out, they'll still compare it to miku.

hmmm...mary sues?

Ah that's very true.
